What is tallow gland packing and where is it used?

The structure, production and applications of tallow gland packing braided from synthetic-blend cotton yarn.

Published:

Tallow gland packing is a sealing element produced by impregnating synthetic-blend cotton yarn with paraffin and special oils, then braiding it diagonally in 2–3 layers into a square section.

Applications

  • Ship shafts
  • Cold water pump engines
  • Pipe connection housings
  • Shaft housings and pump stuffing boxes

Why it is preferred

The square braided section distributes pressure evenly inside the stuffing box. Paraffin and oil impregnation reduces friction and slows shaft wear, giving long service life in low-speed and cold water applications.

Installation tips

  • Cut the rings at a 45° angle and stagger the joints by 90–120° on each ring
  • Clean the stuffing box completely of old material before installation
  • Slight dripping on first start-up is normal; tighten gradually
